OSRS Ranged Training Guide

Ranged combat is one of the three main attack styles that are used in OSRS. This guide will provide the fastest and most efficient ways to train ranged from level 1 to 99 in Oldschool Runescape. Followed by some viable alternatives for those who don’t want to follow the meta when it comes to Ranged Training.

General Ranged Training Notes

  • Rapied attack style when training, with all ranged weapons.
  • Follow our ranged gear progression guide and always use the highest offensive stat gear for ranged training.
    • Elite Void when facing super low defence monsters
    • Masori, Armadyl, Crystal and Black Dragonhide when monsters with defensive stats.
    • If on-task and low defence monsters, always opt for slayer helmet and your best ranged gear.
  • Animal Magnetism quest should be completed ASAP – this will unlock the Ava’s Device, which will return most of your Ammunition to you and provide offensive bonuses.

Fastest Ranged Experience

Below you can find the fastest methods to reach 99 ranged in old school runescape.

Questing: level 1 – 32

Complete the following quests to quickly get from level 1 to 32 ranged without ever doing any significant ranged combat:

  • Death to the Dorgeshuun
  • Shadow of the Storm
  • Horror from the Deep

Dwarf Multicannon: level 1 – 45

You will need to have completed the quest “Dwarf Cannon” to unlock the Dwarf Multicannon. This can then be used with cannonballs to target multiple low level targets at once. The cannon can deal up to 30 damage each attack, meaning it can clear enemies relatively fast and provides ranged experience for doing so.

The best places to use a cannon for low level ranged training are;

  • Rock Crabs
  • Sand Crabs
  • Ogres

Chinning Maniacal Monkeys: level 45 – 99

OSRS Black Chinchompa

Chinchompas are the fastest way of training ranged in OSRS. When thrown they can hit multiple targets in a 3×3 radius, meaning they can generate huge amounts of damage and experience in multi-combat scenarios. The best place to do this is at Manical Monkeys, in Kruk’s Dungeon on Ape Atoll. Although this will require chapter 2 of Monkey Madness II to have been started.

Due to the monkeys low defensive stats, it is best to use elite void ranged here due to its damage boosting effects. However, this requires a significant time investment in pest control. So, if you do not plan to use Elite Void in the long-term, then you can just use your best ranged armour, ideally Masori, but Armadyl or D’hide is fine. Rigour is also highly recommended and boosts experience rates by around 5-7%.

The type of chinchompa you use will also affect experience rates, with the strongest chinchompas (black) providing the best experience rates. At level 99 it is possible to get over 1 million ranged experience per hour. A breakdown of the experience rates at different levels with different types of chinchompas can be seen below.

Alternative Training Methods for Range in OSRS

Due to the high cost associated with Chinning and its difficult entry requirement (Monkey Madness II) some viable alternatives can be found listed below for training ranged in OSRS.

Killing Crabs: level 1 – 45/70

OSRS Rock Crabs

Rock, Sand, Swamp and Ammonite crabs provide some of the most accessible and afkable ways to train ranged in OSRS. These monsters are all beneficial for combat training as they have high health and low defence, making them viable for low level combat and ranged training. While these monsters have very low offensive stats too, it is still recommended to have between 20 and 30 defence as a minimum if you are truly AFKing these monsters. Many of them are agressive, meaning you can go AFK for up to 10 minutes, they can be found at the following locations:

  • Relekka – Rock Crabs
  • Hosidius – Sand Crabs
  • Port Phasmatys – Swamp Crabs
  • Fossil Island – Ammonite Crabs

Nightmare Zone: level 70 – 99

Nightmare Zone is one of the best AFK training methods for ranged. Players can spend up to 20 minutes completely AFK, before they will stop auto-retaliating to monsters in the instance. Up to 70,000 ranged experience per hour can be achieved with a magic shortbow (i), rune arrows and a super ranging potion. Higher experience rates are better with more powerful ranged weapons such as the Toxic Blowpipe, although, this may not be viable due to the associated costs for scales and darts.

The best monsters for afkable experience are:

  • Sand Snake (The Depths of Despair)
  • Count Draynor (Vampire Slayer)
  • King Roald (What Lies Below)
  • Trapped Soul (The Ascent of Arceuus)
  • The Kendal (Mountain Daughter)

Slayer Training with Ranged: level 75 – 99

OSRS Slayer

Players can train ranged while they are training slayer at the same time. While it is not the most efficient way, it can still be very viable and a more enjoyable experience all round, while saving money. However, it is only recommended to start at level 75, when the player has access to the Toxic Blowpipe. Additionally, make sure you have an imbued Slayer Helmet, as it provides 15% damage and accuracy to ranged combat.
