Basilisks are unlocked when the player reaches level 40 slayer. To be assigned Basilisks, you will also need 20 defence, the requirement to wield a mirror shield. Basilisks only attack with a slash-based melee attack. So, protect from melee can be used, but if you have good defence it is not needed or advised.

Do Basilisks drop the Basilisk Jaw?

No, regular Basilisks do not drop the jaw. Only the Basilisk Knight, a more powerful version of the Basilisk will drop the Basilisk jaw.
