OSRS Nightmare Guide

The Nightmare of Ashihama is a large monster that resides in the Sisterhood Sanctuary under Slepe. She is known for dropping unique rewards such as the Inquisitor Armour Set, Inquisitor’s Mace and a variety of powerful orbs. Players can fight the Nightmare in a variety of team sizes. Alternatively, players can fight a more powerful version, Phosani’s Nightmare, but this can only be done in solo.

This OSRS Nightmare guide will go over all of the key nightmare strategy plans and tactics to get quick and efficient kills.


  • Priest in Peril for access to Morytania.
  • High Combat stats (magic and melee).
  • Recommended completion of a taste of hope for the Drakan’s Medallion.

How to get to the Nightmare of Ashihama

There are currently two methods of transportation that are commonly used:

  1. Use the Drakan’s Medallion to teleport to Ver Sinhaza and run north. After the dock, run east to arrive at slepe.
  2. Teleport to the Ectofuntus with the Ectophial teleport. Pay Andras 10,000 coins to row to slepe from the dock to the north of the Ectofuntus. Run north-east from the dock you arrive at to reach slepe.

Mechanics & Strategy


The Nightmare’s health is not reduced directly from the player. Instead, you will need to break the nightmares shield and attack the totems in the room. Once the shield is shattered and all 4 of the totems have been killed, 800 damage will be dealt to the Nightmare. Since she has a total hp of 2,400, there will be three phases of this.The totems are weak to magic attacks, so it is best to switch to magic when killing the totems.

Auto Attacks

Protection prayers can be used to mitigate the majority of the Nightmares damage. Correctly prayed against attacks will deal significantly less damage than those not prayed against. Additionally, the nightmare will focus her attacks on the player with the highest defensive stats. Her ranged and magic attacks will still hit all players, but the melee attacks will target only the tank, unless you are standing close by.

Magic Attack

When launching her magic attack she will spin and surround herself with pink petals. She’ll then fire the petals towards the player. A demonstration can be seen in the image below.

Range Attack

The Nightmare will begin to contort itself when launching a range attack. This will be a total of 4 contorted movements before finally launching a missiles towards the player. A demonstration can be seen in the image below.

Melee Attack

During the melee attack, the nightmare will charge her claws and swipe them forward towards the player with the highest defensive stats. Other players can avoid this by moving away from her target. The target can either move back to dodge the melee attack or pray melee for protection. A demonstration can be seen in the image below.

Special Attacks

  • Sleepwalkers: At the start of the second and final phases, nightmare will summon sleepwalkers that walk towards her. They die instantly when taking any damage, but if they are able to reach the nightmare then the player will be hit for high damage. This can be over 70 damage, or in a solo if any reach her the player will always die.
  • Grasping Claws: A black portal will spawn under the nightmare and smaller portals will form around the arena. Move away from any of the black portals to avoid being damaged.
  • Flower Power: The room will be divided into four quadrants. One will be safe and highlighted by the fact it is surrounded by white flowers. If you are not in the safe zone, you’ll take rapid damage.
  • Husks: Two husks will spawn around random players in the nightmare arena. The player will be stuck in place and not able to move until the husks are killed. A blue husk will attack with magic, while a green one will attack with ranged. This special attack can only take place during phase 1.
  • Curse: Protection prayers will be altered as the nightmare has confused your vision. Protect from magic will now be protect from missiles. Protect from Missiles will now be protect from melee and protect from melee will now be protect from magic. This can only occur during phase 2.
  • Surge: The nightmare will teleport to the edge of the room and surge across the arena. Anyone in its path during the surge will be hit for damage of up to 60 hp. This will only occur during phase 3.
  • Parasites: The Nightmare can infect players by throwing a parasite inside of them. Drink a relicym’s balm or Sanfew Serum as soon as possible to reduce the damage when the parasite bursts out of the player. When the parasite spawns, kill it as quickly as possible to prevent it healing the nightmare, use dragon claw special attacks for this. This can only occur during phase 2.
  • Spores: Mushrooms or Spores will begin to appear around the arena. Avoid standing near them or they will explode and disable your run and increase your attack speed by 1 tick. You must not be within 1 tile radius of them at any time to avoid it. This can also only occur during phase 3.

How to kill the Nightmare efficiently?

First Phase

  1. Pray melee, switch to ranged or mage when appropriate.
  2. Land 1 Dragon Warhammer Special attack.
  3. Stand on a different side to the tank to avoid melee attacks if in a team scenario.
  4. Avoid Nightmare’s Grasping Claws, Husk and Flower Power special Attacks.
  5. Use crush weapons to deplete the nightmare’s shield.
  6. Then attack the four totems with magic attacks.
  7. Kill sleepwalkers as they spawn before the start of phase 2.

2nd Phase

  1. Attack the nightmare to reduce its shield again while using the correct protection prayers.
  2. Deal with Grasping claws, Curse and Parasite special attacks.
  3. When a parasite spawns use dragon claws to kill it as fast as possible.
  4. When the shield is depleted use magic gear again to attack all four totems.
  5. Finish any sleepwalkers off that spawn before phase 3 starts.

3rd Phase

  1. Attack the nightmare to reduce its shield once more.
  2. Deal with Grasping Claws, Surge and Spores attacks.
  3. If you are infected by spores, keep 2 or more tiles away from teammates to avoid infecting them.
  4. Finally charge all four totems to defeat the nightmare.
